Q: Why is it important to keep a website's
file sizes small?
A: 1. When browsing the internet time and
bandwidth usage is of the essence. Internet users will therefore be more
inclined to peruse a website which opens quickly and does not incur big
downloads.
2. When hosting a website, you often pay for the amount of web space
that is required. Smaller file sizes ensure lower hosting costs.
Q: Does this mean I have to limit my
content?
A: Text takes up very little space.
Graphics use a little bit more. The biggest obstacle to accessing your
content however, is the unnecessary "bells and whistles"; flashy
designs, music, etc.
Q: Why are good search engine listings so
important?
A: With websites it is unfortunately not
"build it and they will come". There are millions of websites on the
net. Over 90% of them are accessed via search engine requests. While it
is not possible to guarantee good listings, you can cater to the demands
of the search engines' automated listing methods. This is mostly
done by ensuring that your text and meta tags (keywords built into the
html-coding) are relevant to the content of the site.
